Hello!

Sorry that I didn't meet many of you at the feast.

[A pause, as though she is thinking of elaborating. But she doesn't.]

My name is Antonia Santos Diegues, but I am called Nieta. I am the mistress of the castle's kennel. I don't need a lot of help like Joe or Sycora, but if you wish to talk, my kennels are on the opposite side of the bridge to your barracks. My dogs are only puppies. They're too young to go hunt, but they are lots of fun and they go crazy for new smells or tastes. I know that this can't be easy for you and I will help where I can. And it will become easier. And in the mean time-

[Another pause, this one full of static and spluttering.]

-What could be better than smelling like dogs while a little fur-monster licks your face?

So I hope that I will meet you soon!

Haha, yeahhhh.

[Smuggling is BENEATH galactic heroes. Gosh.]

Wouldn't say 'rare', but purebreds are hard to come by even on my home planet. Lots of mutts running around.

What is wrong with mutts? Are they a pest?

[She's confused. Perhaps she's not understanding. She has realized only now that this woman is from space. Or the future. Or both.]

Depends on who you ask. Never had a dog myself, but there's something to be said for having a best friend who doesn't judge you.

[Shepard won't get into what happens when the stray population in Earth slums spikes. Culling is a shit-nasty business.]

True! But I think I would miss talking.

You are from space? Or the future?

[Curiosity cannot be sated.]

Heh, if dogs could speak, we'd all be in for it. Anyway, yes.

[A beat.]

Yes I'm... from space. Can't tell you if I'm from the future without knowing ... when you're from?

[Asking what year someone's reality is feels a tad ridiculous. Shepard isn't sold on the 'your universes are asploded' bill yet.]

[Audio]

The year was 2010 before I was revived here. But I don't think that this will mean much unless you know the Earth calendar.

[Shepard looses a long, impressed whistle.]

I know it. I'd say my time is a long way past 2010.

Been... [counting] 'bout a century and a half since then.

[Audio]

[identity profile] vivenieta.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[Nieta's reply is slow.]

That... Is a long time. But at least there were still dogs, instead of machines that replace everything.

[Audio]

[identity profile] xenoshepherd.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry to disappoint, but we've got both in spades. Machines modeled after dogs, even.

[Audio]

[identity profile] vivenieta.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
That's a pity.

You will maybe find it a little hard here. There aren't very many machines at all.

[Audio]

[identity profile] xenoshepherd.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
We didn't always rely on machines to get the job done. I'm no stranger to getting my hands dirty, if that's what you're implying.

[Audio]

[identity profile] vivenieta.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
No! That's not what I meant.

[Oops?]

It was strange for me to come here from 2010. I think... thought that if you came from the future then it would be stranger.

[Audio]

[identity profile] xenoshepherd.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
You, uh... got me there.

Won't pretend it's not trying, thinking backwards like this, but we've got to work with the tools we have.

[Audio]

[identity profile] vivenieta.livejournal.com 2011-04-20 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! It needs getting used to...

[Feeling a little self-conscious, Nieta decides to change the subject.]

What is your name again?
